The
cottage of “La
Serra
del
Boix”
is a good example of the big cottages built in Catalonia during the
fourteenth anf fifteenth centuries. It is built on the top of a
mountain at a height of 995 metres and it occupied a distinguished
place in the culture and in the history of the region. That is why it
it is considered as a protected good of cultural interest.
During the epoch of its construction there was a stage of crisis in
Catalonia due to the pests and the wars. Therefore, the agrarian
production was affected by the heavy climate changes and the descent
of the labour. So, a social unrest was created. There were also
revolts against the feudal system.
After
obtaining some information from the Regional Archives of Ripoll, it’s
important to know that in 1876 Josep Muntades was the landlord, who
had several servants at his disposal. This explains that the Muntades
family was an important, noble family in Ripoll and so the cottage of
“La Serra del Boix” was well-known when this family was living there.
We
also know that Josep Muntades had a brother called Ramon, who was a
priest. This was a tradition of the epoch: the youngest son was
obliged to follow ecclesiastic studies to give a certain prestige to
the family.
After
79 years, the Muntades family abandoned the cottage. Between the
fifties and the seventies there were several families living there.
The
evolution of this cottage has been amazing.
It
has been uninhabited since the seventies. In 1970 the last inhabitants
died or they went to live in the city, in order to have better life
conditions. Then, in 2002 the restoration repairs were begun by the
Blancafort-Clusells family.
The
state of the cottage was deplorable, almost in ruins. It was a
phantasmagoric cottage.
So
nowadays, its function has also changed. In olden days its function
was residential, it was the landlord’s, the servants’ and the
peasants’ home.
At
this moment, the principal house (the old landlord’s house of four
floors and 1200 m2) is being restored, preserving the old srtucture
with a great authenticity. So, the old landlord’s house and the old
straw lofts and stalls have been rehabilitated with all the necessary
comforts, in order to offer you four double rooms and two excellent,
independent apartments.
